I moved back the day that the Structured Reading Notes for prompt 30 are due from Monday, February 25 to Tuesday, February 26. While it was not part of the formal lecture today, here are some historical developments that you could write about for contextualization (remembering that you need to have two sentences for each - one sentence describing the development and one relating it to the topic). Some possibilities are:

• the cotton gin
• development of a textile industry in New England
• the spread of slavery into the old southwest (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc.)
• the Great Awakening
• the ending of the importation of slaves in 1808 (making it easier for slave communities to develop a truly American American culture)
